This video lecture from Aliphatic Hydrocarbons (F.Sc. second year Chemistry) covers the Alkanes and their method of preparation. Two methods have been discussed. The hydrogenation of Alkenes and Alkynes in a suitable catalyst like nickel, palladium or platinum at elevated temperature (process as called the Sabatier and Sendern’s reaction).Examples have been discussed which include the hardening of oils to ghee and margarine. A second method is the removal of halide group by the reduction (addition of hydrogen) of Alkyl halides by zinc metal in the presence of halogen acids.
